We are excited to announce our MOM (Motivating Mom of the Month) for February! Each month we will take a moment to honor one of our local Fit4Mom Montgomery County Moms for her efforts to lead a healthy lifestyle and for her dedication to the program. This month we honor Dana Tompkins.
Instructor Maya says, "Dana has been such a consistent hard worker. She always tries a level 2/3 option, and never complains! We love that she always bring Luke's toys to share with friends, whether it is playgroup, or the children are just hanging out after class! My favorite Dana moment was in a Silver Spring class I was teaching. As soon as the class was over, Dana pulled out a box of Starbucks coffee for everyone! It was such a delight and sweet surprise. Dana, you are an amazing Mom and strider!"
We asked Dana a few questions so we can all get to know her better, and here is what she had to say:
1. Who are the members of your family?
My husband, Tom, our son, Luke (21 months) and two very furry dogs, Milo and Sawyer
2. What is/was your career?
Before Luke, I was the senior advisor to the Assistant Secretary of Terrorist Financing at the U.S. Treasury Department. This past summer, I went back to Treasury part time and am now doing long-term strategic planning in our illicit finance division.
3. How long have you been a member of Stroller Strides of Montgomery County, and what has it done for you?
I started going to SS classes in September 2013 and became a member in January 2014. As for what it's done for me, I hardly know where to start. It gave me a reason to get off the couch and stop watching cop shows (see question 8). It gave me a schedule. It gave me mommy friends. It gave Luke some of his first friends. And finally, it made me feel like I was in control of things again!
4. What is your favorite strides exercise?
Anything with arms!
5. What is something that has surprised you about motherhood?
How blissfully boring, relentless, and wonderful it is.
6. List 3 of your favorite things:
- Watching my husband play with Luke
- Hiking with our whole family, including the dogs
7. What your proudest mommy moment so far?
I love when Luke is independent and reads to himself or draws on his own. Also, when he uses his manners without being prompted (this has happened 1.5 times)
8. Any advice for other moms out there?
Don't sit on the couch and watch Law and Order or Criminal Minds. It'll make you depressed and paranoid! Trust me! Get out of the house. Find a schedule. Find mom friends. Ask for help if you need it--from friends, family, doctors, whomever.
Thank you, Dana, for being such a valuable part of Our Village here at FIT4MOM Montgomery County! We appreciate you!
Check back to see who our MOM will be next month!
