We are so excited to announce our MOM (Motivating Mom of the Month) for July! Each month we will take a moment to honor one of our local FIT4MOM Montgomery County Moms for her efforts to lead a healthy lifestyle and for her dedication to the program. This month we honor Alice Hughes!
" Alice started Stroller Strides when her daughter Harper was only six weeks old. Even though she was new to motherhood she jumped right into Stroller Strides with everything she had. She works so hard during class and is so fun to hang out with after class (Harper too!). I'm so glad she has continued with us even though she is no longer within walking distance to downtown Silver Spring :)"~Instructor Kristy
We asked Alice a few questions so we can all get to know her better, and here is what she had to say:
1. Who are the members of your family?
My little family includes my husband, Adam, our 4 month old daughter Harper and her puppy brothers Zeus and Foster.
2. What is/was your career?
Before Harper got here I was teaching 9th grade English and Health at Archbishop Carroll High School. I was also coaching both their girl's and boy's volleyball teams as well as for a local club (travel) team, Metro. Now that Harper is here I am a full time momma and wife! I have been slowly getting back into coaching and look forward to being with a team next spring!
3. How long have you been a member of FIT4MOM Montgomery County, and what has it done for you?
I tried to join FIT4MOM about 2 weeks after Harper was born. I had researched it while I was pregnant and couldn't wait to meet other moms who enjoyed working out and being healthy. I officially joined the day after my 6 week check up, sometime in mid April. Joining FIT4MOM has helped me and my family in many ways, we have a schedule, I talk to adults during the day, I am learning about more cool places to go or take my husband out for dinner and I am starting to feel strong and fit again (Back in most of my pre-prego clothing). I have always worked out with a team and have struggled in my adult life working out independently, this village is my new team and has made working out easier and dare I say fun again.
4. What is your favorite class exercise?
It's hard to pick a favorite exercise. I can say that my favorite thing about class is that each class is different. I can go to 4 workouts a week and never do the same thing.
5. What is something that has surprised you about motherhood?
I was not prepared for how much her first real tears would hurt or how good those first giggles would feel!
6. List 3 of your favorite things:
1- Morning snuggles
2- Being outside
3- A good cup of hot coffee
7. What is your proudest mommy moment so far?
Watching my husband become a dad! He loves to get her dressed in the morning, babble with her and carry her in the front pack. When we visit him at work his face lights up and she smiles, it's my favorite! He travels for work a lot and requests photos and videos while he is away and when he returns home from a trip he talks to Harper about all the things she has done while he was away. I thought when he finally got home I would take a long hot shower or do something for me but I find myself watching and eavesdropping on their daddy-daughter time.
8. Any advice for other moms out there?
Airplane mode! My husband and I try to turn our phones on airplane mode for one day a week to fully enjoy family time. Airplane mode lets us still use our phones as cameras but lets us focus on spending the day together. Exceptions can always be made, like when I needed the GPS to clock our walk on Charity Miles. But there is something very liberating about finding your cellphone at the bottom of the bag at the end of the day and realizing you didn't miss it. Our Airplane days have been some of my favorites! WARNING- Don't forget to let the grandparents know you are going dark for the day so they don't worry when you don't answer their texts!
Thank you, Alice, for being such a valuable part of Our Village here at FIT4MOM Montgomery County! We truly appreciate you & the positive energy you bring to class and Our Village!
Check back to see who our MOM will be in August!
