Team Spotlight - January 2022

It's Back!

We have an amazing, dedicated and talented team of instructors and playgroup captains here at FIT4MOM | MOCO + FREDERICK. I love giving everyone the opportunity to get to know a little more about each one of them, and I'm so so (like seriously SO) excited to bring our spotlight back this month after almost a two year hiatus!

So with that, we're going to start our spotlight off this month with.....Alice Hughes!

Alice is such an amazing human. If you've ever talked to her, you know that she's so real, so kind, and so optimistic. Her energy and her smile are contagious, and you'll find both when you attend her classes!

It's been so fun getting to know Alice, from the time she started attending classes with one baby back in 2016....until well, fast forward two children and two FIT4MOM instructor certifications later, and here we are! She can be found teaching fun and engaging Stroller Strides classes and upbeat killer 360 classes in the lower end of our territory (usually!). If you can make your way to one of her classes, you'll definitely be glad you did!

Anyway, I'll stop rambling. Please read on, learn more about Alice and her family, and then go find her in a class!

xo, Heather

Who are the members of your family?

Hughes family party of 5 includes myself and my Husband, Adam, our 3 daughters Harper (almost 6) Hayden (3) and Henley (1) and our pound puppy Foster (7).

Where can people find you, i.e. what’s your role within FIT4MOM | MOCO + FREDERICK?

All things Downtown Silver Spring! I love taking and teaching classes at Veterans Plaza and the NEW location Nolte Park. I teach both Stroller Strides and Strides 360 and I am a sucker for an outdoor workout on a beautiful day!

Tell us your {entire} FIT4MOM story!

You sure you want the entire thing? Okay here are 5+years of F4M history coming your way!

Before becoming pregnant with my oldest I remember having a great workout routine however, while I was pregnant I slowly stopped working out. I was so scared to do something wrong that I didn't do anything, thinking I would return to working out once I had the baby. I googled how to work out on maternity leave and found the F4M site. The day I took Harper home from the hospital I e-mailed Heather, ready to attend my first class only to learn I had to wait 6 weeks!! I was too excited to get started I scheduled that appointment for first thing on a Tuesday morning and stopped at my first class on the way home!

Shortly after joining we moved out to college park and my walk to class turned into a much longer drive. I thought about quitting but luckily Claire and Kristy reminded me how much more than a daily workout Stroller Strides had become. I was going 4/5 times a week and staying for ALL the playgroups and coffee. The 'big kids' helped teach Harper to walk and the knowledge and opinions of the other moms was so much better than anything I would find on Google. Shortly after that I took on my first role as a Playgroup Captain.

I attended Strides until the day I went into Labor with Hayden. Hayden's labor was so much shorter and easier and I credited that with how strong and in shape I was. I wasn't scared to move my body the second go around because of the variations offered and the other moms I worked out with who had done it safely too.

After that I was talked into joining Run Club. I say it that way because I really didn't think I liked running. But I really like training, I like competing with my last time or distance and I love race day! At the same time I became an instructor and really love helping other people find joy in fitness.

I joined for the workout and because I didn't have any mom friends or family in the area. I stayed because these mom friends became so much more, offering support when my husband almost lost his job, listening when my in-laws became sick, pushing me to learn to love running, starting our kiddos in soccer and feeding my family after the addition of baby 2&3.

I could go on and on about how much easier my life as a mom is because of both the workouts and community I found at F4M. I became a playgroup caption and right after having Hayden became an instructor. I am so proud when my big girls play Stroller Strides and know that women can be strong and kind.

What is your favorite exercise/activity to teach?

I LOVE teaching 360! It is so instantly gratifying, moms get quicker with each out and back and more confident in the speed and agility drill by the second go through.

In a Stroller Strides class I love when a station makes those kiddos giggle!

What do you love about being part of the #dreamteam?

We are ALL MOMS! No one understands the stress of a stomach bug, snow delay, husbands crazy work schedule or a kiddo who just can't sit through class like another mom. No matter what hiccups come up the team helps cover, offer advice and even pause their workout to rock a stroller so I can finish giving instructions.

How has FIT4MOM or this village helped you during such unusual times?

I thought the option to go virtual was a life saver, run club didn't miss a beat and Fit4baby gave me a chance to be alone and focus on me at a time when I couldn't leave the house.

But the real life saver was the meal train after Henley was born. COVID changed my husband's work schedule in a crazy way. And my normally well timed baby all of a sudden was in the middle of his season. Henley was born on a Tuesday and he was on a flight on Thursday, hours after bringing us home from the hospital. Sure my Mom was here to help and I couldn't have done it without her! But so we're my friends, their food and company.

What’s your why? Why do you keep doing what you do?

My girls are only getting stronger and faster and I want to be able to play with them for as long as they will let me. It is also not lost on me what a wonderful relationship they already have with fitness.

What is a fun fact that our village may not already know about you?

It's no secret I LOVE a good cup of coffee! After being a barista in college I can nerd out over finding or brewing a perfect cup of coffee. I am ALWAYS down for a post class cup! So if you're not quite ready to go home after a workout ... I'm your girl!

Is there anything else you’d like our village to know?

F4M has become a family affair and a fun thing to bond over. My mom and sister are both instructors at my Mom's franchise in New York. I love being able to go home for a long visit and still enjoy my workouts but with them! It also helps my kiddos keep a vacation routine and one they can uniquely share with their cousin.
